Steuben Glass Works, Corning, U.S.A.
- Founded by Frederick Carder b.1863 and Thomas G. Hawkes in Corning, Steuben County, New York in 1903
- Carder worked previously designing for Stevens and Williams in England and was instrumental in developing coloured glass for Steuben including the iridescent gold and blue “Aurene” and nacreous “Ivrene” glass familiar to the range of lampshades produced.
- During WW1 the company was sold to Corning Glass Works and in 1932 Carder became Art Director. By now the trend was towards producing colourless art glass.
- Known for his experimentation with colour and form Carder’s reputation remains very high with collectors. He died in Corning in 1963, aged 100.
